For Students

At Hockerill, careers education is a priority. We are committed to helping every student make confident, informed decisions about their future by providing high-quality guidance, experiences, and support from Year 7 onwards.

What Students Can Expect

Students have access to impartial, up-to-date careers advice from qualified professionals within school and through trusted external partners. This includes guidance on subject choices, further and higher education, apprenticeships, and employment pathways.

All students are entitled to one-to-one careers guidance sessions, where they can explore their interests, strengths, and ambitions and receive tailored advice for their next steps.

Students take part in meaningful encounters with employers, universities, and training providers, including workshops, talks, networking events, and work experience opportunities that help them understand the world of work.

Students can use a wide range of careers tools and information, including:

  • Online careers platforms and self-assessment tools
  • A regularly updated Careers Library available to all year groups
  • Guidance on gap years, employment trends, and developing employability skills
  • Students can speak to the Head of Careers, based in the Sixth Form Centre, with any careers-related questions.
  • Careers Drop-In takes place.
  • Students can also book appointments with a professional Careers Advisor from Hertfordshire Services for Young People, who is in school every Wednesday offering impartial advice on careers, courses, and applications.

Students receive additional support at important decision points, including:

  • Choosing GCSE and IB subjects
  • Applying to UK and overseas universities
  • Understanding future employment trends and how to maximise employability

We also signpost trusted guidance such as Russell Group – Informed Choices to help students make well-informed subject and university decisions.
