Curriculum Overview
At Hockerill, we offer a truly distinctive academic experience, combining a rich variety of learning opportunities with a commitment to excellence. Our curriculum spans the International Baccalaureate (IB) Middle Years Programme at Key Stage 3, a wide range of GCSEs at Key Stage 4, and a choice of the globally acclaimed IB Diploma Programme and A Levels in the Sixth Form.
IB Middle Years Programme
In the Middle Years Programme, students benefit from a dynamic and internationally focused curriculum. Students study two modern foreign languages, choosing from French, German, Italian, Japanese, Mandarin, and Spanish. Adding to the uniqueness of our programme, some students also study History and Geography in French or German during Years 9 and 10, fostering bilingual competence and a deeper cultural understanding.
IB Middle Years Programme for Years 7-9
GCSE
At Key Stage 4, students transition into an EBacc-focused curriculum, preparing them for a broad selection of GCSE examinations. Lessons continue to integrate the IB’s ‘Approaches to Teaching and Learning’ methodology, emphasising critical thinking, concept-based learning, and global awareness. Hockerill students consistently achieve outstanding GCSE results, placing the College among the top-performing schools nationally.
IB Diploma
In the Sixth Form, students can choose the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP), a rigorous and balanced curriculum prepares students for success at university and beyond.
The programme develops intellectual curiosity, critical thinking, independence and an international outlook, while encouraging students to make connections across different areas of learning. Hockerill’s IB results consistently exceed global averages, reflecting the commitment and hard work of our students and staff.
IB Diploma Programme for Sixth Form
A Levels
From September 2027, students can choose A Levels as an alternative to the IB Diploma. Most students study three A Levels. Students taking Mathematics and Further Mathematics study four A Levels. Students can also combine two A Levels with a Level 3 Applied qualification in Criminology or Food Science and Nutrition. All A Level students also take a Sixth Form Elective, which allows them to study another area, continue with a subject they value or gain an additional qualification.
