When do applications for Year 7 entry in 2027 open?
Applications open in September 2026 for children currently in Year 6 of primary school.
How do I apply for a Year 7 place?
You must apply through your Local Authority for both day and boarding places.
How do I apply for a day place?
Select “Hockerill (Day)” as one of your preferred schools on your Local Authority Common Application Form by 31 October 2026.
How do I apply for a boarding place?
Select “Hockerill (Boarding)” as one of your preferred schools on your Local Authority Common Application Form by 31 October 2026. You must also submit a Supplementary Information Form (SIF) directly to Hockerill by 31 October 2026.
What happens after I apply for a boarding place?
Your child will be invited to attend a Boarding Suitability Interview during the Michaelmas term as part of the boarding admissions process.

Aptitude Tests
When are the Language and Music Aptitude Tests for Year 7 2027?
The Language and Music Aptitude Tests for day places will take place on 19 September 2026. Test scores will be emailed to applicants who took the tests by 10 October 2026.
Who are the aptitude tests for?
Aptitude places are for day students only, with 12 places allocated through the aptitude criterion.
Does my child have to take an aptitude test to apply for a day place?
No. Your child does not have to take an aptitude test to apply for a day place. However, if your child does not take the test, they cannot be considered under the aptitude oversubscription criterion. They will still be considered under all other applicable oversubscription criteria.
Is there any benefit to taking the aptitude tests for a boarding place?
No. There is no benefit to taking the aptitude tests when applying for a boarding place.
When do the aptitude tests take place?
The Language and Music Aptitude Tests for Year 7 2027 will take place on 19 September 2026. We are unable to offer an alternative date if a child is sitting another test on the same day, unless there are applicable extenuating circumstances.
Is there any benefit for siblings of current day students to take the aptitude tests?
No. There is no benefit for siblings of day students in taking the aptitude tests.
Can my child take one or both aptitude tests?
Yes. Applicants can choose to sit the Language Aptitude Test, the Music Aptitude Test, or both.
Can we see past aptitude test papers?
No. We do not provide past test papers.
What do the aptitude tests assess?
The tests are designed to assess a child’s aptitude for language or music, rather than their current level of ability or prior learning.
Does the Language Aptitude Test require knowledge of another language?
No. The Language Aptitude Test does not assess prior knowledge of an additional language.
Does my child need to play an instrument for the Music Aptitude Test?
No. Children are not asked to perform on an instrument as part of the Music Aptitude Test.

In-Year Admissions
Can I apply for a place in another year group?
Entry into other year groups depends on there being a vacancy in the relevant year group.
How do I apply for an in-year boarding place?
In-year boarding applicants should submit the In-Year Boarding Supplementary Form, which is available on the Admissions section of our website. https://www.hockerill.com/admissions/admissions
How do I apply for an in-year day place?
In-year day applicants should apply via Hertfordshire County Council.
Day & Boarding
What are the day student hours?
Day students attend from 8.40am to 3.40pm, Monday to Friday, and from 8.40am to 12.20pm on Saturdays.
What is Flexi Boarding?
Flexi Boarding allows students to experience boarding while remaining primarily day students. Students can arrive from 7.15am Monday to Saturday and stay until 7.30–9.00pm Monday to Friday, or 12.20pm on Saturdays. Overnight stays are available by arrangement.
What does a typical Flexi Boarding day include?
Flexi Boarders have access to breakfast, the regular College day, activities and clubs, supper, boarding house social time and prep.
How many nights do Flexi Boarders stay at College?
Flexi Boarders are required to stay overnight at College for 7–10 nights per year. Additional nights are available at a supplementary charge.
What is Weekly Boarding?
Weekly Boarders stay at College from Sunday evening until Saturday at 12.20pm during the College week.
How many nights do Weekly Boarders stay at College?
Weekly Boarders stay for a minimum of 3 and maximum of 6 nights per week. When they are not staying overnight, they follow the Flexi Boarding timetable.
Do Weekly Boarders go home at weekends?
Yes. Weekly Boarders return home for exeat weekends.
What is Full Boarding?
Full Boarders are resident at College throughout term time. They can remain at College during exeat weekends or return home.
When do Full Boarders go home?
Full Boarders leave College during half terms and school holidays.
