Year 8 in Normandy: Language, Culture, History
Forty-three Year 8 students recently enjoyed a memorable week in Normandy, taking part in a rich programme of cultural, linguistic and historical experiences.
The group visited the spectacular Mont Saint-Michel, one of France’s most iconic landmarks, where students were able to explore the site and learn more about its unique history and significance.
A particular highlight was a visit to the bustling market in Dinan. Here, students had the opportunity to put their French language skills into practice by purchasing their own lunch from local stallholders. It was a pleasure to see students confidently engaging in conversation, buying items such as ham and fresh tomatoes to create their own traditional baguettes.
The trip also provided an important opportunity for historical reflection. Students visited Omaha Beach and the American Cemetery at Colleville-sur-Mer, where they took time to reflect on the events of the Second World War. The experience was described by many as both sobering and thought-provoking, offering a powerful reminder of the impact of conflict and the importance of remembrance.
Overall, the trip was a great success. It was a valuable opportunity to see students in a different setting, develop their independence, and strengthen relationships beyond the classroom. Staff thoroughly enjoyed getting to know the group better and witnessing their enthusiasm throughout the week.
