ESS (Environmental Systems and Societies)

Intent

The ESS (Environmental Systems and Societies) curriculum is designed to help students understand the interdependence between human societies and the environment, and to develop the knowledge, skills, and values needed to act as responsible global citizens.

Through a systems-based approach, students learn how natural and human processes interact, how resources are used, and the consequences of human activity for ecosystems, biodiversity, and climate. The course develops critical awareness of sustainability, equipping students to make informed choices about environmental challenges and solutions. 


Implementation

  • Curriculum sequencing: In Year 12, students begin by exploring systems thinking, sustainability, and ecosystem interactions before moving on to biodiversity, conservation, human population growth, and resource management. In Year 13, learning builds on this foundation with a focus on water, soil, pollution, climate change, and atmospheric systems. 
  • Practical application: Hands-on fieldwork is central, giving students opportunities to develop practical skills in measuring, analysing, and interpreting ecosystems, biodiversity, and environmental data. 
  • Skills development: Students engage with ecological and demographic data, practise scientific analysis, and use tools such as diversity indexes and population pyramids. They also explore case studies and global agreements to connect theory to real-world contexts. 
  • Preparation for assessment: The course gradually develops students’ ability to research, write, and evaluate critically, culminating in revision and consolidation programmes to ensure exam readiness. 

Impact 

  • Students develop a deep understanding of ecological systems, environmental pressures, and sustainable management strategies. 
  • They acquire practical scientific and analytical skills, enabling them to interpret environmental data, evaluate human impacts, and propose solutions. 
  • The curriculum fosters critical thinking, cultural awareness, and ethical responsibility, preparing students to contribute meaningfully to debates on sustainability at local, national, and global levels. 
  • By the end of the course, students are equipped with the knowledge and transferable skills needed for higher education and careers in environmental science, geography, sustainability, and related fields.
