Intent
The Maths curriculum is designed to develop students’ conceptual understanding, problem-solving skills, and mathematical reasoning from Year 7 through Year 13. Students progress from foundational numeracy, geometry, and algebra to more advanced topics including calculus, probability, statistics, and complex numbers.
The curriculum emphasizes the application of mathematical thinking to real-world contexts, logical reasoning, pattern recognition, and analytical thinking. It aims to nurture confidence, resilience, and independence in mathematical problem-solving while preparing students for examinations at national and international levels, including IB Standard Level and Higher Level pathways.
Implementation
- Progressive and sequenced learning: The curriculum builds from core numeracy, algebra, geometry, and statistics in lower years to advanced functions, calculus, probability, and linear algebra in senior years. Topics are revisited with increasing depth and complexity.
- Integrated skills approach: Mathematical concepts are taught alongside problem-solving, reasoning, representation, and communication skills, ensuring students can apply knowledge in diverse contexts.
- Practical applications: Students engage in investigations, modelling, real-world problem-solving, and exploration tasks to connect abstract concepts to tangible scenarios.
- Differentiated pathways: The curriculum supports multiple learning pathways, including Higher Level (HL) and Standard Level (SL), as well as applications for analysis (AA) and applications and interpretation (AI), to cater to varied abilities and aspirations.
- Assessment and feedback: Regular formative and summative assessments, including internal assessments and exam preparation, ensure understanding, track progress, and develop exam technique and confidence.
- Interdisciplinary connections: Students apply mathematical thinking to science, technology, economics, and other subjects, fostering transferable analytical skills.
Impact
- Mathematical proficiency: Students acquire fluency across all branches of mathematics—number, algebra, geometry, trigonometry, calculus, probability, and statistics—and develop the ability to manipulate and interpret mathematical structures accurately.
- Problem-solving and reasoning: Students enhance critical thinking, logical reasoning, and analytical skills through investigations, modelling, and problem-solving tasks, fostering the ability to generalize and make connections across topics.
