PE: GCSE
Intent
The intent of the GCSE Physical Education curriculum is to provide students with a deep understanding of how the human body functions during physical activity, how to improve performance, and how to make informed decisions for lifelong health and wellbeing. The course combines theoretical knowledge with practical application, developing students’ ability to link scientific principles, psychological understanding, and socio-cultural influences to real sporting contexts.
Through the study of anatomy and physiology, movement analysis, fitness and training, health and wellbeing, sport psychology, and socio-cultural factors, students will:
- Develop a secure understanding of how body systems respond and adapt to exercise.
- Apply biomechanical and psychological principles to enhance performance.
- Understand the impact of training, nutrition, and lifestyle choices on health.
- Explore how social and cultural factors influence participation and performance.
- Build analytical, evaluative, and reflective skills through coursework and practical performance.
The curriculum aims to inspire all learners to lead healthy, active lifestyles, value physical activity, and pursue further study or careers in sport, fitness, and health sciences.
Implementation
The GCSE PE curriculum is delivered through a sequenced balance of theoretical and practical lessons across Years 10 and 11. Each unit builds progressively to deepen understanding and prepare students for both exam components and practical performance assessments.
Teaching and Learning Strategies:
- A combination of teacher-led explanation, student-led investigation, and applied practice.
- Practical lessons to apply theoretical content in real sporting contexts.
- Use of formative assessment, peer feedback, and exam-style questions to check progress.
- Differentiation to support all learners, ensuring accessibility and challenge.
Impact
By the end of the GCSE PE course, students will:
- Demonstrate a secure understanding of how physiological, psychological, and socio-cultural factors influence performance.
- Apply theoretical knowledge to practical performance and training design.
- Show confidence in analysing and improving performance using key terminology and data.
- Exhibit independence and self-discipline in managing fitness and wellbeing.
- Achieve strong outcomes in both written and practical assessments, reflecting excellent progress from individual starting points.
The impact is measured through:
- GCSE examination results (Paper 1 and Paper 2).
- Coursework and practical performance grades.
- Student reflections on health, performance, and learning.
- Engagement and participation in extracurricular sport and physical activity.
Ultimately, GCSE PE produces students who are not only physically competent but also knowledgeable, analytical, and inspired to continue engaging in sport and fitness beyond school.
