Intent
At our school, the PSHE curriculum aims to equip students with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to navigate life safely, responsibly, and confidently. Across all year groups, PSHE focuses on three core areas: Relationships and Sex Education (RSE), Health and Wellbeing, and Wider Careers and Personal Finance.
- In RSE, students progressively develop an understanding of healthy, respectful relationships, consent, personal boundaries, online safety, sexual health, and strategies for recognising and responding to abuse. The curriculum is sequenced to build knowledge and skills year-on-year, starting with foundational concepts in Year 7 and progressing to adult-relevant topics in Years 12–13.
- In Health and Wellbeing, students explore physical, mental, and emotional health, developing resilience, self-care strategies, and the ability to make informed decisions about lifestyle, wellbeing, and stress management. Content evolves from basic health awareness in Year 7 to independent wellbeing management in post-16 education.
- In Wider Careers and Personal Finance, students are introduced to career pathways, financial literacy, budgeting, and employability skills. The curriculum builds from foundational understanding in Year 7 to complex financial planning and career readiness by Year 13.
The overarching intent is to prepare students for lifelong personal, social, and professional success, empowering them to make informed, responsible, and safe choices in all aspects of their lives.
Implementation
- PSHE is delivered through a timetabled curriculum, tailored to the developmental and age-appropriate needs of each year group.
- Lessons use interactive, reflective, and scenario-based learning, including discussions, case studies, role-play, peer collaboration, and self-assessment activities. These methods ensure that students can apply their learning to real-life situations.
- The curriculum is inclusive, representing diverse relationships, families, health experiences, careers, and financial circumstances.
- Safeguarding and pastoral care underpin all lessons, providing a safe and supportive environment for sensitive topics.
- Parents are informed and consulted throughout the curriculum, ensuring transparency and alignment with statutory guidance.
- Students are encouraged to set personal goals, reflect on learning, and develop skills for independence, wellbeing, and responsible decision-making.
Impact
The PSHE curriculum ensures that by the end of secondary education and post-16 study, students:
- Have a deep understanding of healthy relationships, sexual health, and personal boundaries, and can make informed, safe choices regarding their wellbeing and relationships.
- Are resilient, self-aware, and capable of managing physical, mental, and emotional health independently.
- Possess financial literacy, career awareness, and employability skills to plan and navigate future education, work, and personal finance responsibly.
- Can confidently apply knowledge and skills to real-life situations, demonstrating empathy, respect, and critical thinking.
- Are prepared to transition successfully into adulthood with the confidence and competence to make informed, safe, and responsible life choices.
