Intent

At Hockerill, the Spanish curriculum aims to ignite a passion for language learning and cultural exploration. We want our students to become confident communicators who can use Spanish effectively for real purposes in speech and writing.

Our curriculum provides opportunities to engage with the rich diversity of the Spanish-speaking world, developing curiosity, empathy, and a global outlook. Beyond linguistic ability, we aim to foster resilience, creativity, and problem-solving skills that prepare students to thrive in a multilingual and interconnected world.

Implementation

Our curriculum is ambitious, engaging, and carefully sequenced from Year 7 to Year 13:

  • Years 7–9 (KS3-MYP): Students begin with inquiry-led themes that help them see Spanish as a living, vibrant language. They explore questions such as What is Spanish like?, What is my identity?, Why do we do hobbies and sports?, What do we celebrate?, and What is our place in the world?. Learning focuses on developing core vocabulary, grammar, and study skills while connecting language with meaningful contexts. Students explore daily routines, festivals, migration, childhood, literature, and global responsibility, gaining a foundation in both linguistic competence and intercultural awareness.
  • Years 10–11 (KS4/GCSE): Following the AQA GCSE course, students expand their ability to communicate across a variety of topics such as free time, travel, relationships, identity, health, school life, and the environment. They practise using a wide range of tenses (past, present, future, conditional, and subjunctive) and develop confidence in reading, listening, writing, and speaking. Exam practice is embedded throughout, supported by mock assessments, targeted feedback, and opportunities for spontaneous communication.
  • Years 12–13 (KS5/IBDP): At IB level, students deepen their linguistic and cultural engagement through global themes such as Social Organisation, Experiences, Identities, Human Ingenuity, and Sharing the Planet. Higher Level students also study Spanish literature, enabling them to appreciate how language shapes ideas and perspectives. Students critically engage with topics such as migration, education, technology, environmental challenges, human rights, and globalisation, while also refining their skills in analysis, research, essay writing, and oral presentation.

Throughout all stages, the curriculum combines explicit grammar teaching with opportunities for creativity, authentic communication, and cultural exploration. Film, literature, music, and current affairs are used to make learning meaningful and relevant.

Impact

Our Spanish curriculum ensures that students:

  • Acquire the confidence and skills to communicate effectively in Spanish across a wide range of contexts.
  • Develop intercultural awareness and empathy by engaging with the diverse realities of Spanish-speaking societies.
  • Make excellent academic progress, achieving strong results at GCSE and IB, and are exceptionally well-prepared for further study or employment.
  • Build transferable skills such as resilience, independence, adaptability, and critical thinking.
  • Leave Hockerill as capable, confident, and globally minded individuals, equipped with the linguistic and cultural competence to play an active role in the wider world.
