Intent

The Psychology curriculum is designed to develop students’ understanding of human behaviour, thought, and emotion through scientific investigation and theoretical analysis. Students explore core approaches and research methods, while developing critical thinking, analytical, and practical skills essential for higher-level study.

Key aims across the stages:

  • Years 12 (KS5/IBDP): Introduce students to research methods and the foundational approaches in psychology (Sociocultural, Cognitive, and Biological). Develop an understanding of how behaviour is studied scientifically and how theories explain human thought, emotion, and social interaction. Begin independent investigation through the Internal Assessment.
  • Year 13 (KS5/IBDP): Consolidate knowledge of the core approaches, complete option topics such as Abnormal and Developmental Psychology, and apply understanding through analysis and exam preparation. HL students further extend their study with additional components and research tasks.

Implementation

The curriculum is delivered progressively, integrating theory, research, and practical application.

Key approaches:

  • Lectures, discussions, and guided reading to introduce theories and concepts
  • Practical investigations and research exercises to develop scientific literacy
  • Internal Assessment (IA) to provide hands-on experience with experimental replication and data analysis
  • Case studies and application tasks to explore real-world psychological phenomena
  • Differentiation for HL and SL students, providing additional depth and assessment opportunities for HL
  • Exam preparation through practice papers, past papers, and formative feedback
  • Years 12 (KS5/IBDP): Students learn research methods, Sociocultural and Cognitive Approaches, and begin Abnormal Psychology. They complete the Internal Assessment replicating a classic study, developing practical research skills.
  • Years 13 (KS5/IBDP): Students study the Human Relationships and Health and Wellbeing and consolidate previous approaches. They complete their option topics and engage in structured exam preparation, refining analytical and evaluative skills.

Impact

The Psychology curriculum ensures that students:

  • Develop scientific and analytical skills: Ability to design, conduct, and evaluate psychological research, interpreting data and applying theory to evidence.
  • Enhance understanding of human behaviour: Insights into cognitive, sociocultural, biological, developmental, and abnormal psychology, linking theory to real-world phenomena.
  • Build independent research skills: Through the Internal Assessment, students practice methodological rigour, critical thinking, and structured reporting.
  • Prepare for formal assessment and progression: Consolidation of approaches, option topics, and exam practice equip students for final IB or A-level examinations and higher education.
  • Foster critical evaluation and ethical awareness: Students consider limitations, ethical issues, and implications of psychological research and practice.
  • Achieve measurable outcomes: Assessments, internal research, and examination performance provide clear evidence of knowledge, application, and analytical development.
