Intent

The Business curriculum aims to develop students’ understanding of how organizations operate, make decisions, and respond to changing environments at local, national, and global levels. It equips learners with the analytical, financial, and entrepreneurial skills needed to evaluate business challenges and opportunities critically. 

Through themes such as enterprise, marketing, finance, human resources, operations, and ethics, students gain insight into how businesses create value, manage risk, and contribute to society. The curriculum builds cultural capital by linking theory to real-world contexts—encouraging students to think ethically, sustainably, and creatively about the role of business in a global economy. 
It is ambitious, inclusive, and coherently sequenced to ensure all learners, regardless of background or starting point, can achieve highly and develop transferable skills for future study and employment. 


Implementation

  • Sequenced progression: 
    • Years 10-11 (KS4 / GCSE): Students are introduced to the dynamic nature of business, exploring enterprise, customer needs, marketing, finance, operations, human resources, and external influences. They develop an understanding of how businesses start, grow, and adapt to change, using data analysis and case studies to link theory to practice.
    • Years 12-13 (KS5 IBDP Business Management): Students deepen their knowledge of business strategy and management through five key units: Business Organization and Environment, Human Resource Management, Finance and Accounts, Marketing, and Operations Management. They examine real-world case studies, analyse quantitative and qualitative data, and engage with core IB concepts of change, ethics, sustainability, and creativity (CESC). Independent research projects, including the Internal Assessment, develop evaluative thinking, communication, and decision-making skills.
  • Pedagogy: Teaching combines direct instruction, problem-solving, and case-based learning. Lessons include discussion, simulation, and the application of business tools such as SWOT, break-even, and cash-flow analysis. Digital tools and real business contexts enhance engagement and relevance.
  • Skills development: Across all stages, students progressively develop analytical, evaluative, and decision-making skills alongside financial literacy, teamwork, and communication. At KS5, students engage in strategic analysis, critical evaluation, and extended writing to prepare for higher-level study and professional contexts.
  • Inclusion and challenge: The curriculum is designed to be accessible to all learners, with scaffolding and support embedded to promote equity. High-attaining students are stretched through enrichment, real-world case study analysis, and opportunities to explore entrepreneurship and innovation.

Impact

  • Knowledge and understanding: Students develop a secure grasp of business concepts, processes, and interconnections across finance, marketing, human resources, and operations. They can explain and evaluate how businesses respond to opportunities, challenges, and external change. 
  • Analytical and evaluative skills: Learners apply quantitative and qualitative data to inform judgments, analyse performance, and propose strategic solutions. By KS5, they demonstrate independence in problem-solving and evaluation using evidence-based reasoning. 
  • Enterprise and employability: Students gain the confidence to think like entrepreneurs and decision-makers, applying creativity and critical thinking to real-world business problems. 
  • Cultural capital and values: Through topics such as ethics, sustainability, globalization, and technological innovation, students understand the wider impact of business on people and the planet. They are encouraged to reflect on responsible leadership and global citizenship. 
  • Progression and outcomes: Students achieve strong academic outcomes and develop the skills required for further study in business, economics, finance, or management. They leave with transferable skills in analysis, communication, teamwork, and decision-making—highly valued in higher education and the workplace.
