Intent
The Biology curriculum is designed to develop curiosity and understanding of the living world, from the smallest cells to complex ecosystems. It equips students with powerful knowledge about how organisms function, interact and evolve, while building the scientific skills needed to analyse evidence, solve problems and make informed decisions.
By exploring themes such as health, genetics, biodiversity and sustainability, the curriculum provides students with cultural capital to understand their role as global citizens and prepares them for further study and future careers in science, health and the environment.
The curriculum is ambitious, inclusive and carefully sequenced to ensure all pupils, regardless of starting point, can succeed.
Implementation
- Sequenced progression:
- Years 7-9 (KS3-MYP): Students build foundational knowledge of cells, body systems, reproduction, inheritance and ecosystems. They develop an understanding of how life processes are connected and how organisms adapt and survive.
- Years 10-11 (KS4/GCSE): Knowledge deepens through detailed study of cell biology and microscopy, human biology, disease, bioenergetics, homeostasis, inheritance, evolution and ecology, underpinned by practical application and exam preparation.
- Years 12-13 (KS5 IB/DP): Students gain an advanced understanding of biochemistry, genetics, biodiversity, physiology and global challenges such as climate change and sustainability. They apply disciplinary knowledge through independent research, complex data analysis and extended investigations.
- Skills development: Across all stages, students progressively develop scientific skills including microscopy, experimental design, data analysis, modelling, evaluation of evidence and scientific communication. KS5 further develops high-level critical thinking and independent inquiry, preparing students for higher education and scientific careers.
- Practical and enquiry-based learning: Frequent experiments and investigations are embedded across MYP–KS5, allowing students to apply theory to practice, develop resilience and refine their working scientifically skills.
- Cross-cutting themes: Big ideas such as sustainability, biodiversity loss, disease, bioethics and the role of science in society are threaded throughout, encouraging debate, moral reasoning and contextual understanding.
- Inclusion and challenge: The curriculum is designed to be accessible for all learners, with scaffolding, support and stretch built into teaching to ensure equity of access to ambitious outcomes.
Impact
- Knowledge and understanding: Students develop a secure and broad knowledge of biology, enabling them to explain, analyse and evaluate biological phenomena at multiple scales (cellular, organismal and ecological).
- Scientific thinking: Students learn to think like biologists—asking questions, planning investigations, testing hypotheses, interpreting evidence and evaluating validity.
- Skills for life: They acquire transferable skills in critical thinking, data analysis, communication and problem-solving, which prepare them for a wide range of future pathways.
- Cultural capital and values: By engaging with issues such as health, disease prevention, climate change and conservation, students understand the role of biology in society and develop the awareness needed to be responsible global citizens.
- Progression and outcomes: Students are well-prepared for the rigour of GCSE and IB/DP Biology, and for progression into higher education and careers in medicine, research, biotechnology, conservation and other STEM-related fields. Fieldwork, independent study and investigative skills equip students for lifelong learning.
