Weapons training day at Merville Barracks
On Saturday 24th January, twenty‑six Hockerill CCF cadets, accompanied by four staff members, travelled to Merville Barracks for a full day of weapons training. The visit marked an important step in the cadet training programme, giving students hands-on experience with the L85A2 Cadet GP rifle and equipping them with essential skills in weapon handling and safety.
For many participants, this was their first exposure to the weapon system, and the day focused on learning and perfecting the full suite of weapon drills. Under careful guidance, cadets were taken through safety procedures, loading and unloading drills, and detailed instruction on the responsibilities that come with handling military equipment.
The training proved to be a tremendous success. By the end of the day, every cadet had demonstrated competence in all required drills and successfully passed the Weapon Handling Test. This achievement reflects both the commitment of the students and the high standard of instruction provided by the CCF staff.
The event was significant as it marked the first time that Year 8 cadets have taken part in weapons training as part of Hockerill’s CCF programme. Despite being among the youngest members of the contingent, they showed exceptional enthusiasm, maturity, and engagement throughout the day—fully embracing the opportunity to broaden their skills and take their place within the wider CCF community.
By completing this stage of their training, all participating cadets are now qualified to take part in future field exercises and live firing activities. This opens the door to richer training experiences and strengthens the overall capability of the contingent.
Well done to all cadets involved.
