Introduction to the Boarding Houses
Hockerill has five boarding houses, each offering high-quality accommodation, age-appropriate routines and a strong sense of community for students aged 11 to 18.
Each House is led by a dedicated Head of House and pastoral team who provide tailored support and guidance. Boarders are assigned a personal House Tutor who oversees their wellbeing, academic progress, and day-to-day experience.
Houses are more than places to live—they are vibrant communities where boarders develop a sense of pride, loyalty and identity. Through the House Status System, students are recognised for their contribution to the community, gaining privileges and responsibilities along the way.
Boarders are encouraged to take initiative, lead by example and contribute to House life through formal roles and regular student voice meetings. With strong pastoral care, clearly defined routines and a culture of respect and inclusion, the boarding experience at Hockerill is one of opportunity, growth and belonging.
Student Voice in the Boarding Houses
Student voice is an integral part of life in each of our boarding houses. At Hockerill, we believe boarders should have a meaningful say in shaping their experience, and we actively encourage feedback to help us continually enhance the support and provision we offer.
Boarders are welcome to speak informally with staff at any time if they have concerns or suggestions about boarding life. In addition to this, there are more formal Student Voice Committee meetings focused on the following areas:
-
Catering
-
IT
-
Health Centre
-
House Committees
These committees meet regularly throughout the year and are chaired by key members of staff. There is a clear emphasis on listening to student feedback and responding with tangible improvements.
Each boarding house has student representatives involved in these committees, playing a valuable role in helping shape the boarding experience for everyone.
