Governance at Hockerill
The trustees (governors) of Hockerill Anglo-European College have responsibility for raising school standards through their three key roles of setting strategic direction, ensuring accountability and acting as a critical friend.
The full governing body meets four times per year, and on further occasions if required. Most committees of the governing body meet half termly to cover the following areas:
- Curriculum
- Pastoral and Boarding
- Resources
- Staffing
- Steering
In addition there are committees for discipline, hearings and exclusions. Membership of the discipline and hearing can be made up of any three governors (except in some cases staff governors) and membership of the admissions committee is agreed by governors annually.

As Joint Chair of Governors it is an honour to lead the strategic development of the College for the benefit of all our students and to ensure that the school continues to offer a world class education. My professional life has taken me to many parts of the world where I have been involved in financing large scale sustainable development projects with the aim of extending access to electricity and safe water. I currently combine this with research and teaching roles at the University of Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership. I was originally appointed a Parent Governor in 2014 and serve on the steering, staffing, resources and curriculum committees. I had two sons at the school and we live on a farm in Stansted. I have also served as a Governor at Little Hallingbury School and have worked in a number of local primaries, including as part of my PGCE, which I obtained in 2017. Two have now completed their IB and started university. My son is studying Medicine and my daughter Anthropology and Social Science. I have two sons at Hockerill – in years 9 and 11 – and one who has gone from studying the IB Diploma to Durham University. I became a Governor in March 2018 after retiring as the Chair of Governors at Howe Green House School. Being a Governor at Howe Green House School for nine years gave me a huge range of experience and insight – having been involved in all aspects of the school’s development. It is an incredibly exciting time for Hockerill and it is an honour for me to be on the Board of Governors and working with the Senior Leadership Team to ensure the school has a clear mission and strategy in place. . I am the Client Services Director at a leading design and communications agency in London specialising in corporate reporting, branding and digital communications. Prior to that I worked in marketing and PR – both agency and client side. I live in Bishop’s Stortford with my wife Emma and our three sons. Positions & Committee Membership:

I became a Parent Governor in 2006. I sit on each of the Governing Body Committees and I have been Link Governor for English, Careers, Art and Oxbridge applications. I support College recruitment, and in the early years I was responsible for setting up Hockerill Parents and Friends, for people to get involved in College and offer much needed fundraising support. Having three children who have completed their journey through the College and a daughter in Year 9, I see the impact of the unique education on offer at Hockerill through their development. This motivates me to work to help Hockerill sustain such opportunity for all. Professionally I work full time for St Catharine’s College, Cambridge, in alumni relations. I also sit on the Development Committee for The Queen's College, Oxford. In my spare time I enjoy skiing, running, gardening, reading and am a member of a wine tasting club. Professionally, I am a co-founder of a Building Engineering and Sustainability consultancy in town where we measure our success by the improvements we make to the overall efficiency and sustainability of buildings. I gained a degree in Civil Engineering at Southampton University and then was awarded my PhD following my research on the interaction between flow and sediments around shipwrecks. At home I specialise in the "Sunday Roast" and walking it off. I also enjoy an active involvement with Bishops Stortford Swimming Club as a parent of two competitive swimmers.

One of the great things about being a parent is that you can continue to grow and learn with your children. Both my sons went to Hockerill, and I had the privilege of being a part of their journeys from years 7 to 13. I am continually impressed by the dedication and professionalism of all the staff, and how the experience of being a pupil at Hockerill creates aspiring, creative, global citizens that I am sure will pass on these values to their kids. When asked to be a Governor, it was a very simple decision. I believe in Hockerill and want to support and be part of the future development of this great school. I have lived and worked in the US, Belgium, The Netherlands and the UK. My area of expertise are Information Technology, new business start-ups and M&A. I live in the village of Henham, and am a keen supporter of Bishops Stortford RFC as well as an appalling pianist. Positions & Committee Membership: Link Governor for Data

I have two Hockerill educated sons, both at Durham Universtiy (one studying Modern Languages the other Philosophy). Before joining the governing body here, I gained 8 years’ experience as a school governor, having served at Thorn Grove School in Bishop’s Stortford as Vice Chair, as well as link governor for languages and music. I have a degree in German, Swedish and Economics and have worked for several companies in finance – with experience in both very large and very small organisations, where I have seen the advantage of language ability at first hand. I currently run my own consultancy business. I am keen to play my part in helping the College to stay at the top of its game academically, to look to find areas for improvement where appropriate and to encourage, support and enthuse wherever possible.

My two children both attended Hockerill as day students. During their time at the College, I was one of the founder Members of the Hockerill Parents and Friends (HPF) Committee. I was delighted to become a Community Governor recently and have the opportunity to ‘give back’ to the College, for the wonderful education and experiences my children received as pupils. I have lived in Bishop’s Stortford for 20 years and my work background is comprised of many years in the Financial markets, in varying roles at differing sized companies. I am currently a Head of Market Surveillance. I look forward to becoming an active Governor, supporter and contributor to the ongoing development of the College. In my spare time I have a passion for sport, the Outdoors and hold a TESOL qualification.

After studying Modern Languages at Oxford University, I followed a marketing and international business career, operating across Europe, Asia and North America. I set up an international food and drink strategy and marketing consultancy 9 years ago, which I run in partnership with offices in 10 other markets, and also act as a Board Adviser to a leading independent London PR agency and an exhibitions company. I am currently Chair of the Curriculum Committee, past chair of Marketing and Business Development Committee and a member of the Steering Committee. I have been an active partnership governor for 17 years and live nearby in Takeley with my wife and 3 children, all of whom have attended Hockerill (one still does) . Spare time usually means enjoying food, theatre, music and (some of the time) Spurs.

Hockerill College played a huge role in the life of our family over the twelve years that our son (now a pilot in the RAF) and daughter (now working for an equine veterinary professional body) were students. Thereafter I maintained my involvement with the College through the Hockerill Parents and Friends, assisting at Open Days and other activities and before deciding to take a step further and become a Community Governor. I am a chartered shipbroker and have spent my entire working life in the maritime sector. I now run an international membership organisation covering 63 countries and more than 30 languages, so in many ways it is just like Hockerill - only bigger! I have been fortunate to have spent many years in the international, multi-lingual and multicultural industry that is world shipping and this convinced me many years ago of the importance of the outwardly focussed global mindset that is so deeply embodied in Hockerill’s core ethos. I enjoy contributing to the work of the Governing Body and by so doing ensuring that the College maintains its excellent and well-deserved reputation for academic, pastoral and boarding excellence. Hockerill College provided an excellent all round education to both my sons - the elder having recently graduated from the University of Manchester after studying History and Politics, and the younger currently studying Law at the University of Nottingham. For this reason and having come to value thoroughly their time at the College, the special international community that is Hockerill, I am delighted to be a governor of the College. I was previously a primary school governor in Furneux Pelham. I work as a planning lawyer in a local authority shared legal service based at Norfolk County Council which acts for local authorities throughout Norfolk and East Anglia. Prior to working with local authorities, I was for many years a civil service lawyer based chiefly at the Communities and Local Government Department in London. I have a keen interest in education and have volunteered in a couple of Hertfordshire special schools as well being a regular volunteer helper at Riding for the Disabled.
Positions & Committee Membership:
Member of Pastoral & Boarding Committee Current Term of Office: 4th January 2021 - 3rd January 2025
