Governance and Academy Documents

Governance at Hockerill

The governors of Hockerill Anglo-European College have responsibility for raising school standards through their three key roles of setting strategic direction, ensuring accountability and acting as a critical friend.

The full governing body meets four times per year, and on further occasions if required.  Most committees of the governing body meet half termly to cover the following areas:

  • Curriculum
  • Pastoral and Boarding
  • Resources
  • Steering

In addition there are committees for discipline, hearings and exclusions.  Membership of the discipline and hearing can be made up of any three governors (except in some cases staff governors) and membership of the admissions committee is agreed by governors annually.

I have been a Staff Governor at Hockerill for 11 years now and have enjoyed the opportunity to get involved in a wider decision making process and, I hope given back something to the College which has been a big part of my family’s life. Both of my children were educated at Hockerill and my husband was Chair of the Finance committee some years ago.

As Language College Manager I am responsible for the co-ordination of the Trips and Exchange programme and also have a College-wide overview on out of College visits. Before going to live in Europe (for 17 years!) I worked in marketing and advertising as a Brand Manager. I feel passionate about internationalism and the need to develop broad horizons and enjoy reading. I am interested in Sociology and Politics in particular.

I have a degree in German, Swedish and Economics and have worked for several companies in finance – with experience in both very large and very small organisations, where I have seen the advantage of language ability at first hand. I currently run my own consultancy business.

I am keen to play my part in helping the College to stay at the top of its game academically, to look to find areas for improvement where appropriate and to encourage, support and enthuse wherever possible.

Jonathan Williams

Partnership Governor

Hockerill College played a huge role in the life of our family over the twelve years that our son (now a pilot in the RAF) and daughter (graduated in 2015 before moving on to UEA) were students. Thereafter I maintained my involvement with the College through the Hockerill Parents and Friends, assisting at Open Days and other activities and I am now honoured to be able to take this one step further as a newly appointed Community Governor.

The role of a Governor is completely new to me and therefore something of a challenge as by profession I am a chartered shipbroker and have spent my entire working life in the maritime sector. I now run an international membership organisation covering 58 countries and more than 30 languages, so in many ways it is just like Hockerill - only bigger! I have been fortunate to have spent many years in the international, multi-lingual and multicultural industry that is world shipping and this convinced me many years ago of the importance of the outwardly focussed global mindset that is so deeply embodied in Hockerill’s core ethos. I am looking forward to making an active contribution to the work of the Governing Body and by so doing to ensure that the College maintains its excellent and well-deserved reputation for academic, pastoral and boarding excellence
